What are Staff Upsells?
me&u has partnered with Apple and Stripe to bring ‘Tap to Pay on iPhone’ to Crew. With this functionality, staff can take orders and payments from guests. i.e. they can ‘upsell’ items.
How do I use Staff Upsells?
- First, make sure you have access to Crew and a login to Manage on me&u.
- Contact your Customer Success Manager to get you added.

Select the table group and table you wish to add items to
Just as if you’re a Guest, we need to make sure we select a table first. Tables can be selected via search or manual selection. In the example below, we will start an order for table 41 in the section called ‘Window’.

Select the items you wish to add to your cart
Your me&u menu will be available in Crew. Crew will automatically sync with your me&u Menu if items are or are not available. Your modifiers and upsells will also be available in Crew
You can add items to your cart either via search or manual selection.
In the example below we will add the following to our cart
- Brisket Baked Beans as a side with Fries as an upsell
- Pork Sandwich Platter that has a double cheese and a Sparkling Wine Modifier
- Balter IPA

Review your sale (cart)
Once you’re ready to proceed, click ‘review sale’ to proceed, check the order and add any notes to the order should you need them.
In this example, we are going to remove the Baked Beans and add a note for extra salt with the fries.
Proceed to payment and optionally take a tip
When you select ‘Pay with Card’, the Tap to Pay functionality will be kicked off so someone can pay via card.
Processing payment generally takes ~3 seconds. (press play on the video below)
Screen flip for guest payments
This screen can be flipped around so that guests have a more seamless experience when paying themselves.
Note: phones (both iPhone and Android) are the most seamless payment experiences. The chip reading technology is much faster and higher signal than a physical card.
If a guest is using a physical card it must be presented horizontally
Not flipping the screen
Alternatively - you, as the staff member, do not have to flip the screen and can take payments from a guest yourself by tapping the card on behalf of them. If you are not flipping the screen, the card details can be facing you the right way up.
Once payment has been made - you can optionally provide a receipt, or, move on.
Crew gives you the option to send guests a receipt via SMS or by Scanning a QR code should they want one. All receipts are in PDF Form.
A receipt takes about ~3-4 seconds to generate, however, if the guest does not want a receipt, as soon as the ‘Creating Receipt’ flow is visual - the order and payment have been accepted and you do not need to wait for a receipt to be generated if the guest does not want one. You can simply click ‘New Sale’ and move on.
Taking payments with a physical card
When you're taking payments with a physical card, please ensure that you're holding the card in the correct position over the mobile device. It is important to note the orientation of the card per the image below. If you're continuing to experience difficulties with physical card payments, talk to the chat support team.
FAQs
- Can I use Staff Upsells on an iPad? Unfortunately, Tap to Pay is only available on iPhones as at November 2023. This is a constraint of Apple Hardware. Other Crew features will work on an iPad, however.
- Can I split payments on Staff Upsells: Not yet, but this will come!
- Can I mark items out of Stock? You can access Manage via Crew and mark items out of stock there for now. We will look to make this native in Crew shortly.
- Can I take Cash Orders? Only payments via Cards (or phones that have cards set up on them) can be processed at the moment.
- Can I process refunds? You can access Manage via Crew and refund items there for now. We will look to make this native in Crew shortly
- Can I add orders to a group order/tab? Not yet, but this will come!
- Can I start a group order/tab for a guest? Not yet, but this will come!
