Keeping your printer's firmware up to date ensures it runs reliably, stays secure, and communicates properly with your me&u system.
What You'll Need Before You Start
- Your printer plugged in and connected to the internet via Ethernet cable.
- A laptop or computer connected to the same network as the printer.
- Your printer's IP address (see Step 1 below if you don't have it yet).
💡 Tip: If you haven't completed the physical printer setup yet, do that first before proceeding with the firmware update.
Step 1: Find Your Printer's IP Address
If you already know your printer's IP address, skip to Step 2. Otherwise, follow these steps to print a self-test slip that displays it:
- Turn off your printer.
- Hold the Feed button and turn the printer back on while keeping the button held.
- Wait for the printer to produce two slips.
- Discard the first slip, the second slip will display the printer's IP address.
- Note down the IP address for use in the next step.
Step 2: Access the Printer's Web Interface
Your printer has a built-in web interface you can access from any browser on the same network.
- Make sure your laptop is connected to the same Wi-Fi or network as the printer.
- Open a web browser (Chrome, Safari, etc.).
- In the address bar, type your printer's IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.50) and press Enter.
- The printer's login screen will appear.
- Under System Access, click Login and enter these default credentials:
| Username | root |
| Password | public |
Step 3: Check for and Install Firmware Updates
Once logged in, you can check whether a firmware update is available and install it.
- In the left-hand menu, click Firmware Update.
- Click Check for Updates and wait a moment while the printer contacts the update server.
- Review the result:
- If an update is available: scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Download.
- If no update is available: your firmware is already up to date. Skip to the password update section below if prompted, or close the page.
- Wait for the download and installation to complete and this can take a few minutes. Do not turn off the printer during this process.
- While updating, the printer's indicator light will turn red. When the update is complete, the light will return to green and you'll hear a chime from the printer.
💡 Tip: Don't close the browser or navigate away while the firmware is downloading. Interrupting the update could leave the printer in an unstable state.
Step 4: Log Back In and Update Your Password
After the firmware update, the printer will restart. You'll need to log in again and update the admin password.
- Refresh your browser page and log back in using the same credentials (Username: root / Password: public).
- You will be prompted to set a new password.
- Enter your new password. You may re-use public if you prefer — just make sure to note it down in a safe place.
- Click the following in order:
- Submit
- Save
- Save – Restart Device
- Execute
- Wait for the printer to restart fully. A 'Success' pop-up will appear in the browser once it's ready — this can take up to a minute.
What Happens After the Update?
Once the firmware update is complete and the printer has restarted successfully, you're ready to proceed. Depending on where you are in the printer setup process:
- If this is a first-time setup: continue to connect your printer to your ordering platform (e.g. configuring CloudPRNT settings in your management portal).
- If this was a routine firmware update: your printer should resume normal operation automatically. Verify it comes back online in your printer management dashboard.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Solution |
| Can't reach the printer's web page | Ensure your laptop is on the same network as the printer. Double-check the IP address from the test slip. |
| Login page shows an error | Try refreshing the page or using a different browser. Clear your browser cache if needed. |
| 'Check for Updates' shows nothing | Your firmware may already be current. No action required. |
| Printer light stays red after update | Wait a few more minutes. If it doesn't resolve, power cycle the printer and log back in. |
| 'Success' pop-up never appears | Wait up to 2 minutes. If the page is unresponsive, close and reopen the browser, then re-enter the IP address. |
| Forgot the updated password | Contact our support team to perform a factory reset on the printer. |
