Segments are saved searches that group contacts based on the rules you set. They're dynamic — once saved, they update themselves as guests meet (or stop meeting) the criteria, so the audience you message is always current. This article walks you through how to save a segment using a real example, and how to load it again whenever you want to send a campaign, build an automation, or refresh your view.

How to save a segment
Let's walk through a real example: a segment for your loyal wine customers. The same steps work for any segment you want to build.
- Go to Connect > Contacts
- Click Search your contacts at the top of the contacts table
- Open the first dropdown and select Tags, set the operator to equals, then choose a tag — for example Wine tasting event
- Click Add another search field and add Number of visits is greater than 3 to narrow it to your most loyal wine customers
- Click Apply and search to see the results
- When you're happy with the audience, click Save this segment, give it a clear name like Loyal wine customers, then click Save
💡 Tip — Start simple with one or two filters and add more only if you need to narrow the audience. The fewer the filters, the easier the segment is to reuse.
ℹ️ Note — Segments save the rules, not the list of contacts. Every time you load the segment, the list refreshes to include anyone who currently matches.
Segment ideas to get you started
The more specific your segments, the more relevant your messages — and the better the results. A few ideas to try:
- Birthday this month — guests with a birthday in the current month, ready for a birthday offer
- New customers — guests with one visit, created in the last 30 days, perfect for a welcome flow
- Haven't visited in 60 days — lapsed guests to win back with a comeback offer
- VIPs / High spenders — guests with more than 5 visits and total spend over a threshold you set
- SMS eligible — guests with a mobile number, ready for a quick text campaign
- Local neighbours — guests in your local postcodes who've visited recently, ideal for community events

How to load a saved segment
Once a segment is saved, you don't need to rebuild the search. Pull it up any time to view those contacts, send a campaign, or feed an automation.
- Go to Connect > Contacts
- Click Search your contacts
- Open the Saved segments dropdown and select the segment you want, for example Loyal wine customers
- Your contacts table updates to show only contacts that currently match
💡 Tip — From here you can send the segment a campaign, add it to a flow, export the list, or apply a tag in bulk — all without rebuilding the filters.
FAQ
Do segments update automatically? Yes. Segments are dynamic — every time you load one, contacts who currently match are included, and contacts who no longer match drop out.
Can I edit a saved segment? Yes. Load the segment, adjust the filters, and save the changes over the existing segment name.
Why is my saved segment empty when I load it? The criteria may be too narrow, or no contacts currently match. Open the segment, review the filters, and broaden the criteria if needed.
Can I use a saved segment in a campaign or automation? Yes. Saved segments are available as audience options anywhere you can send a message — campaigns, flows, and automations.
