Tags are a simple way to organise your database. You can apply one or more tags to any contact record to add context and make it easier to locate those contacts later through search.
Across the platform, whenever you add, edit, or update a contact, you’ll have the option to assign tags. There’s no need to set them up in advance—just type the value you want, and if it doesn’t already exist, you can instantly create it by clicking Add option + or pressing Enter.
Tags differ from segments: a tag is static and groups together a collection of contacts, while a segment is dynamic and updates automatically based on criteria. In practice, tags act as quick labels that underpin campaign targeting, performance tracking, and more advanced segmentation strategies. How Tags are Created
There are two main ways tags are created in the system:
1. During Contact Upload (Bulk Tagging)
-
When you upload a spreadsheet of contacts, you can add tags that apply to the entire upload.
-
This is the most common way to tag contacts.
2. Automatic Tag Creation from Integrations
-
Tags can also be created automatically when contacts flow in from integrations (e.g. website forms, me&u, third-party apps).
-
These tags help identify the source of the data automatically.
3. Manual Creation on the Fly
-
When editing or adding a single contact, type the tag you want.
-
If it doesn’t already exist, click Add option + or press Enter to create it instantly.
How Tags Work in Practice
Tags provide the organisational foundation for your database:
-
Data source tracking – See where contacts came from (e.g. “Webform”, “me&u”).
-
System integration – Automatically applied from connected apps.
-
Bulk organisation – Categorise entire uploads in one step.
-
Search foundation – Use tags as criteria in simple searches or advanced segmentation.
Creating, Editing, Renaming and Merging Tags
To remove or delete a tag, click the "X" button next to it. This will remove the tag from all contacts that have it applied. Note that this affects all platform modules (for example, if a form was set to add users to that tag, it will no longer do so).
‼️ Important: If a tag is used in an automation criteria block, update that automation before deleting the tag.
Examples of Tag Use
-
Basic Search – Find all contacts with the tag “Cocktail Event”.
-
Combined Search – Filter by “Cocktail Event” + “VIP” for high-value targeting.
Summary: Tags are flexible, easy to create, and powerful when combined with segments. They’re your starting point for organising contacts, tracking data sources, and enabling smarter campaigns.
