You can make changes to multiple contacts at once directly from the Contacts section in Connect. This is useful for keeping your database organised, applying tags after events or campaigns, updating custom field values, or removing outdated records.
Looking to import contacts? If you need to add new contacts via CSV, see How to bulk upload contacts in Connect.
What you can do in bulk
From the Contacts list, you can select multiple records and perform any of the following actions:
- Tag — Apply one or more tags to the selected contacts
- Update — Change the values of custom contact fields
- Delete — Permanently remove the selected contacts
Step 1 — Select your contacts
- Go to Contacts in Connect
- Use search or filters to find the contacts you want to update
- Select individual contacts using the checkboxes, or use Select All to select all results
Once you've selected one or more contacts, three action buttons will appear: Tag, Update, and Delete.
Tagging contacts in bulk
Tags are a great way to segment and organise your database — for example, tagging contacts who attended a specific event or came through a particular campaign.
- Select the contacts you want to tag
- Click the Tag button
- Choose one or more existing tags, or type a new tag name to create one on the fly
- Click Apply
Good to know:
- This adds the selected tags to each contact — it does not remove any existing tags
- Tags are cumulative, so contacts can belong to multiple tags at once
Updating contact fields in bulk
You can update the values of custom contact fields for all selected contacts in a single operation.
- Select the contacts you want to update
- Click the Update button
- In the Bulk Update panel, select a contact field from the "Column" dropdown
- Enter the new value for that field
- To update more than one field at a time, click Update Another Column
- Click Apply
Good to know:
- Core fields like Name, Email, Mobile, and Date of Birth cannot be edited in bulk — these must be updated individually on each contact's profile
- Only custom contact fields will appear in the Column dropdown
- The update will apply the same value to all selected contacts
Deleting contacts in bulk
If you need to remove contacts from your database — for example, cleaning out old test records or invalid entries — you can delete them in bulk.
- Select the contacts you want to remove
- Click the Delete button
- Confirm the deletion
Good to know:
- Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone
- Depending on the number of records, the operation may take up to 30 seconds to complete
- If you're unsure, consider tagging the contacts first (e.g. "To Review") rather than deleting immediately
⚠️ Important: automations may trigger
All bulk operations (tag, update, and delete) will update each contact's "Last Updated" timestamp. If you have any automations using the "Contact Updated" trigger, those automations will fire for every affected contact.
Before running a bulk update, check your active automations to avoid unintended emails or SMS being sent.
FAQs
Can I bulk update email or mobile number?
No — core fields (Name, Email, Mobile, DOB) can only be edited on individual contact profiles. Bulk update applies to custom contact fields only.
Will tagging remove existing tags?
No — bulk tagging is additive. It adds the new tags without removing any existing ones.
Can I undo a bulk delete?
No — deletion is permanent. If you're not sure, tag the contacts for review first and delete later once confirmed.
Can I use bulk actions on my entire database?
Yes — use Select All after a broad search. Just be careful with large selections, especially for delete operations.
