Where an item sits on your menu affects how often guests order it. This guide shows you how to reorder menu categories, sections, and items in the Manage so your best sellers appear first, where guests are most likely to see and order them. Find out what's selling (optional)
If you already know your top performers, skip ahead to repositioning. If you're not sure, check Insights first.
- Go to Insights
- Open a sales report to see item-level performance, such as units sold or revenue
💡 Tip, position your top three to five sellers per category at the very top. Guests scan menus quickly, and items placed first get noticed more.
How to move a menu category
Categories are the highest level of your menu structure (for example, Starters, Mains, Desserts). Reordering them changes which category guests see first when they open your menu.
- Go to Your Menu > Menu Items
- From the all-categories view, click the Position button in the top right to turn it on (it turns black when active)
- Click and drag the six-dot icon next to the category you want to move
- Click Position again to turn it off and resume normal menu.
How to move a menu section
Sections sit inside a category (for example, a "Burgers" section inside your Mains category).
- Go to Your Menu > Menu Items
- Click into the category that has the section you want to move
- Click the Position button in the top right to turn it on (it turns black when active)
- Click the black Position icon next to the section you want to move
- In the Sections in category panel, click and drag the six-dot icon next to the section you want to move
- Click Position again to turn it off and resume normal menu.
How to move menu items within a section
This is where most positioning happens, putting your best-selling item first within its section.
- Go to Your Menu > Menu Items
- Click into the category that has the items you want to move
- Click the Position button in the top right to turn it on (it turns black when active)
- Click and drag the six-dot icon next to the item you want to move, dropping it in the position you want
- Click Position again to turn it off and resume normal menu.
FAQ
Does reordering my menu affect my POS setup?
No. Repositioning categories, sections, and items in Manage is a display change only and does not affect your POS configuration.
How often should I reposition my menu?
There's no fixed rule, but many venues review item performance monthly or seasonally and adjust positioning to keep their best sellers prominent.
Can I move an item to a completely different category?
You can move an item to another section within the same category, or use Move to another section to place it elsewhere. See How to manage categories, sections and items for the full steps.
Will reordering change my prices or item details?
No. Repositioning only changes the order items appear in, it doesn't affect price, description, or any other item details.
I moved an item but it's not showing in the new position on the live menu, what's wrong?
Changes can take a moment to reflect, or you may be viewing a cached version of the menu. Refresh the guest-facing menu or check in an incognito browser window. If it's still not updated after a few minutes, contact Support.
Why can't I drag an item to where I want it?
Items can only be reordered within their current section, not dragged into a different one. Use Move to another section from the item's options menu first, then reposition it within its new section. See How to manage categories, sections and items.
I've reordered my menu but it doesn't seem to be affecting sales, why?
Positioning is one factor in visibility, but pricing, photos, descriptions, and tags also influence guest choice. Pair repositioning with the tips in How to boost sales on menu items.
