The Connect email editor is a drag-and-drop tool for building polished email templates and campaigns. This article is your reference for everything you can add to an email — every content block, every design option, and how Mailmerge personalisation works.
For the step-by-step on creating a template, see How to create an email template in Connect. For editing, duplicating, or deleting templates you've already built, see How to manage your email templates in Connect. For setting up a full email send, see How to create and send an email campaign.
Before you start
- Custom fonts aren't supported. See Fonts in emails — can I use other fonts? for the full list of web-safe fonts
- Supported image formats are JPEG, PNG, and WebP

How the editor is organised
The editor has three areas:
- The canvas on the left, where your email is built
-
The right pane, which switches between two tabs:
- Content Block — the building blocks you drag into your email
- Design Options — defaults that apply to the whole email
- The bottom bar, which has your Template Name field, Send a test, Preview, Undo/Redo, Cancel, and Save
Add, edit, and move content blocks
Add a block
- From the Content Block tab, click and drag the block you want
- Drop it where you want it to sit — blocks can be placed above, below, left, or right of other blocks
Edit a block
- Click the block on the canvas, or hover over it and click the settings icon
- Edit the content in the rich text toolbar above the canvas, or change the styling in the right pane
Move a block
- Hover over the block and click the move icon
- Drag it to its new position
Remove a block
- Hover over the block
- Click the delete icon
Content blocks reference
Blocks are split into a main set and a More set you can expand at the bottom of the Content Block tab.
Text
A standard text block with a rich text toolbar — bold, italic, underline, lists, links, colour, alignment, font, size, line height. Use it for body copy, paragraphs, and anywhere you'd write a sentence or two.
Use the Mailmerge dropdown in the toolbar to insert personalisation tags (see Personalise with Mailmerge tags).
Heading
The same rich text toolbar as Text, but pre-styled for headings. Use it for section titles and call-outs within the email.
Image
A single image block. Click Add Image in the right pane to upload a JPEG, PNG, or WebP file, or insert an image URL.
Settings
- Fallback/Alt Text — image description for screen readers and email clients that block images
- Max Width (px) — caps how wide the image renders
- Border Radius, Border Width, Border Colour — styling for the image edge
- Horizontal Alignment — left, centre, right
- Link Options — link the image somewhere using the Link picker
Text & Image / Image & Text / Top Image & Text / Top Text & Image
Four pre-laid-out blocks combining a text section and an image, with the image positioned to the left, right, on top, or below. Use these for newsletter-style sections where image and copy sit together.
Each side edits the same way as the standalone Text and Image blocks.
Two images
Inserts two images side by side. Useful for product or category pairings.
Two Text
Inserts two columns of text side by side. Useful for two short messages or feature comparisons.
Separator
A horizontal line that visually breaks up sections of the email.
Settings
- Colour — line colour
- Width (%) — how wide the line is across the column
- Thickness (px) — line weight
- Padding (px) — space above and below the line
Button
A clear call-to-action button — typically the most-clicked element in an email.
Settings
- Text — what the button says (e.g. "Book a table")
- Text Colour, Font, Font Weight
- Link Options — what happens when the button is clicked, set via the Link picker
- Background Colour
- Text Size (px), Border Radius (px), Border Thickness (px), Border Style, Border Colour
- Width (px) and Height (px)
- Horizontal Alignment
💡 Tip — Buttons drive the highest click-through rates. Stick to one primary action per email if you can — a single, clear button is more effective than three competing ones.
Social Share
Inserts a row of social media icons that link to your channels.
Settings
- Icon Images — Flat, Glossy, or Minimal style
- Display — show icon only, or icon and label
- Display (size) — Small, Medium, or Large
- Base Style — Circle, Square, etc.
- Monochrome — render icons in a single colour
- Horizontal Alignment, Text Size, Text Colour, Font
- Icons — add a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn (etc.) icon with the URL to your profile
- Add another social icon — add custom icons (custom icons display at 64 × 64 pixels and aren't affected by Base Style or Monochrome)
💡 Tip — Including a Social Share block in every email is an easy way to grow your following over time.
Footer / Header
Standard footer and header blocks. Drag these in for consistent branding at the top and bottom of every email.
HTML
For advanced users. Lets you paste raw HTML into a section of your email without coding the whole email from scratch.
YouTube Screenshot
Embeds a screenshot of the first frame of a YouTube video, with an optional play button. Clicking the image takes the recipient to your video on YouTube.
Settings
- YouTube Link — paste the full YouTube URL
- Hide Play Button — turn off the play overlay if you'd rather use the screenshot as a static image
- Screenshot Width (px) — sets the rendered size
Article
A pre-laid-out block with a heading, image, and text section in one. Built to save time on newsletter layouts.
Voucher
Insert a customisable voucher block that pulls in the recipient's details.
Settings
- Image, background colour, border, and radius
- The offer text
- Mailmerge tags to personalise per recipient
- Terms and conditions
Barcode
Insert a barcode or QR code that pulls a value from a Mailmerge tag — for example, a loyalty member ID or a unique voucher code.
Settings
- Mailmerge tag — the value the barcode encodes
- Code type
- Image size and alignment
Spacer
A blank vertical gap. Useful for creating breathing room between sections so your email isn't a wall of content.
Setting
- Width of the spacer
Design options reference
Switch to the Design Options tab to set defaults that apply to the entire email. Use this to keep things visually consistent — set your text styles, link colour, and background once instead of styling every block individually.
Text
Sets the default styling for text blocks throughout the email.
- Font — pick a web-safe font
- Text Size (px)
- Text Colour
- Line Height (px) — vertical spacing between lines
Heading
Sets the default styling for heading blocks.
- Line Height (px) — heading-specific line spacing
Other heading settings (font, size, colour) are controlled on each heading block.
Link
Sets the default styling for every link in the email.
- Text Colour
- Text Underline — toggle the underline on or off
- Font Weight — Regular, Bold, etc.
Email Content
Styles the inner area of the email — the part that holds your blocks.
- Border Width, Border Colour, Border Style — outline around the content area
- Content Width (px) — how wide the content sits
- Background Colour — the inside background
Email Body
Styles the outer area around the content — what guests see behind your email.
- Background Colour — the outer background colour
- Background Image — click Add Image to upload a background image
- Background Size — how the background image scales
Personalise with Mailmerge tags
Mailmerge tags pull values from a guest's contact record into your email, so you can address guests by name, reference their last purchase, or show a unique voucher code.
You'll see a Mailmerge option in the rich text toolbar (for Text and Heading blocks), in the Voucher and Barcode settings, and inside the email subject line.
To insert a tag:
- Click Mailmerge to open the Insert a mailmerge tag dialog
- Choose a Mailmerge field category — Contact field (guest profile data — first name, last name, email, phone), Purchase field (data from a guest's purchases), Visit field (data about the guest's visits), Voucher (voucher and offer details), Webform (values from a connected webform), or Other (miscellaneous tags)
- Select the specific field and confirm
⚠️ Warning — If a contact doesn't have that field populated, the tag will render blank in the sent email. Always set a default value when inserting a tag — for example,
{contact.firstname|mate}or{contact.firstname|there}will display "mate" or "there" if no first name is on file.
Link picker — link buttons and images to anything
Anywhere you can link something (the Button block, Image block, and any text link), Connect uses the same Link picker with four tabs.
URL
Link to any external web address. Paste the URL into the field and click Select.
Page
Link to a webform you've built in Connect.
Tick Use for Update Details? to automatically pre-fill the form with the contact data Connect already holds. For example, an "Update your contact details" button can open a form with the guest's name and email already filled, so they only need to add their phone number.
File
Link to a file you've uploaded — for example, a PDF menu, a brochure, or a flyer. You can browse your uploaded files, organise them into folders, or click Upload file to add a new one.
Passkit
Link to a Passkit pass — only available for accounts with Passkit loyalty membership enabled. If you don't see Passkit linking options, this isn't set up for your account.
Troubleshooting
A block isn't dropping where you want it to
- Cause: The drop target isn't a valid position for that block
- Fix: Release the block, then try dragging it more slowly. Look for the blue drop indicator before releasing — it shows where the block will land
Your image won't upload
- Cause: The file format isn't supported, or the file is too large
- Fix: Use a JPEG, PNG, or WebP file. If it still won't upload, compress the image and try again
Mailmerge tag renders as blank or shows the raw tag
- Cause: The contact doesn't have that field populated, and no default value was set on the Mailmerge tag
-
Fix: Always set a default value when you insert a tag — for example,
{contact.firstname|mate}or{contact.firstname|there}
Your font looks different in the test email
- Cause: The font you chose isn't supported by that email client, so it's falling back to a default
- Fix: Pick from the web-safe font list in Fonts in emails — can I use other fonts?
Background image looks stretched or cropped
- Cause: The Background Size setting isn't matching the image dimensions
- Fix: Try changing Background Size in Design Options > Email Body, or upload an image sized closer to a typical email background
Buttons aren't aligning on mobile
- Cause: A fixed Width (px) is wider than the mobile viewport
- Fix: Reduce the button Width, or leave it at the default so it adapts to the email's content width
