Once you've built a few templates in Connect, you'll want to keep them tidy — find the one you need quickly, update designs as your brand evolves, copy a working template as a starting point for the next one, group related templates with tags, and retire ones you don't use anymore.
This article covers every action available from the Templates list — finding, editing, duplicating, previewing, tagging, and deleting. For building a new template from scratch, see How to create an email template in Connect. For the block-by-block editor reference, see Getting started with the Connect email editor.
Before you start
- You'll find Templates in the top right of the global navigation in Connect
- Hover over any template card in the list to reveal the action menu
- Deleting a template can't be undone — check whether it's in use by a campaign or automation before removing it

Find a template
- In Connect, click Templates in the top right of the navigation
- From the left sidebar, click All to see every template, or click a tag (e.g. Automations) to filter to just that group
- Use the search bar at the top right of the template list to search by name
💡 Tip — Templates list alphabetically. A consistent naming prefix like "01 [Venue] Newsletter" or "Auto — Welcome" makes them much easier to find at a glance.
Edit a template
- Hover over the template you want to update
- Click Edit
- The email editor opens — make your changes and click Save
ℹ️ Note — Editing a template only changes the template itself. Campaigns or automations that were already built from this template aren't updated retrospectively — you'd need to re-select the template in those campaigns or automations to pick up the changes.
Duplicate a template
Use duplicate when you want to start a new template from an existing design without altering the original.
- Hover over the template you'd like to copy
- Click Duplicate
- A copy appears in your template list
- Hover over the copy and click Edit to rename and adjust it
💡 Tip — Duplicate a template before making big design changes so you have a safe fallback if the new direction doesn't work out.
Preview a template
Preview opens a read-only view so you can check the design without risking accidental edits.
- Hover over the template
- Click Preview
- The template opens in a read-only view — close it when you're done
Tag templates to organise them
Tags let you group templates by purpose — for example, tagging templates used in automations so you can filter to just those from the sidebar.
- Hover over the template you want to tag
- Click Tag
- In the Template Tags dialog, type or select a tag (e.g. Automations or Monthly Newsletter)
- Click Save
Tagged templates become filterable from the left sidebar of the Templates page, so you can jump straight to, say, all automation templates or all newsletter templates.
💡 Tip — Stick to a small set of tags (e.g. Automations, Newsletters, Promos, Events). Too many tags makes filtering noisy and defeats the point.
Delete a template
⚠️ Warning — Deleting a template can't be undone. The delete won't affect campaigns or automations that have already been sent, but the template won't be available for future sends. If you're unsure, duplicate it first as a backup.
- Hover over the template you want to remove
- Click Delete
- Confirm the deletion when prompted
Tips for keeping your template library tidy
- Prefix your template names so they sort the way you want — "01", "02" for ordering, or "Auto — " for automation templates
- Tag automation templates so they're easy to filter and audit
- Duplicate before redesigning so you can always roll back to the original
- Delete obsolete templates at the end of each quarter to keep the library focused — review what you've used in the last 90 days and retire the rest
- Preview before editing if you're not sure which template a campaign or automation is using — a quick preview confirms the design before you change anything
Troubleshooting
You can't find a template you know existed
- Cause: A sidebar tag filter is active, the search bar is filtering it out, or the template was deleted
- Fix: Click All in the sidebar and clear the search bar. If the template is still missing, it's likely been deleted
Edits to a template aren't showing up in an existing campaign
- Cause: Template changes don't retroactively apply to campaigns or automations that already use the template
- Fix: Open the campaign or automation and re-select the template, or build a new send from the updated template
Tag isn't appearing in the sidebar filter
- Cause: The sidebar hasn't refreshed since the tag was added
- Fix: Refresh the page in your browser
Duplicate isn't appearing in the list
- Cause: The list view may need a refresh, or you're filtered to a tag that the duplicate doesn't have
- Fix: Click All in the sidebar to remove any tag filter, then refresh the page
