If a guest tells you that your email looks different on their phone — colours appear inverted, backgrounds have gone dark, or text is hard to read — the most likely cause is dark mode.

What is dark mode?

Dark mode is a display setting available on most modern smartphones (iOS and Android). When enabled, the phone changes the colour scheme of apps and content displayed on screen to reduce bright light and make it easier to read in low-light conditions.

When a guest views your email in dark mode, their email app may automatically invert or adjust the light backgrounds and dark text in your email to suit the darker colour scheme.

Can this be fixed?

Dark mode is controlled entirely by the guest's device and their email app. There is no way for the platform — or any email sending platform — to override a guest's dark mode setting or tell their phone to display your email in light mode.

This is a limitation of how email clients and mobile operating systems handle dark mode, not a platform issue.

What you can do

While you cannot prevent dark mode from affecting your emails, you can design with it in mind:

• Use high-contrast text and avoid very light text on light backgrounds — these tend to be the most affected by dark mode inversions.
• Test your email on a device with dark mode enabled before sending, so you know what guests with that setting will see.
• Avoid relying on background colours to convey important information, since these are the most likely to be altered.
