Beacons are fixed to your tables with a strong adhesive, so they stay put through a busy service. When you need to lift one off, to relocate it, swap a damaged beacon, or rearrange your tables, that same adhesive can make removal tricky. This guide walks you through three safe methods, starting with the gentlest, so you can get a beacon off cleanly without damaging the beacon or your table.
Before you start
- Grab a length of fishing line
- Have one or two palette knives handy
- Keep a can of WD-40 nearby for stubborn beacons
- Take extra care on wooden or delicate surfaces, and test in a small spot first
💡 Tip, Work through the methods in order. Start with fishing line, move to a palette knife, and only reach for WD-40 if the beacon is really stuck.
Use fishing line
This works best when there is a small gap between one edge of the beacon and the table.
- Find a small gap between the beacon and the table
- Slide a length of fishing line into the gap, underneath the beacon
- Pull the line through softly, working it along to lift the beacon off the table
ℹ️ Note, If the beacon is flush against the table with no gap, fishing line is very difficult to use, as you cannot get the line underneath. Try a palette knife instead.
Use a palette knife
- Slide a palette knife under one edge of the beacon to create a small gap
- Work the knife through the adhesive until the beacon comes off the table
⚠️ Warning, On a wooden table, always work the knife across the grain to avoid damaging the surface.
Use WD-40 and palette knives
Use this method when the adhesive is too strong for fishing line or a single palette knife.
- Spray WD-40 around the beacon
- Leave it for 5 minutes to soften the stickiness of the adhesive
- Place a palette knife under the beacon
- Place a second palette knife on top of the first
- Slide the first palette knife in as far as possible
- Using the second knife, pop the beacon off the surface
You should now be able to remove a beacon from your table safely, whatever surface it is on.
